7 Steps to Break into a Niche Industry

In business, people often say that “the riches are in the niches.” But is the same true for job seekers? Maybe… If you follow these key strategies.

What is a niche industry?

A niche industry is essentially a small, specialized segment of the job market where everyone seems to know each other, and the rules are slightly different from the mainstream.

Think of it like the indie film section of Netflix: Fewer blockbusters, but way more personality. These industries focus on very specific products, services, or audiences, and while they might not be on everyone’s radar, they often have loyal followings and unique opportunities. Breaking in can feel like trying to join an exclusive club with its secret handshake, but once you're in, it’s a tight-knit community with a lot of room to grow if you know how to play the game.

For example, my company, Personal Touch Career Services, has extensive experience in helping individuals secure jobs in various niche areas, including luxury lifestyle management, media, entertainment, human resources, IT, and leadership in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

Regardless of your target, here are seven key steps to break into any niche industry:

1. Research the niche

Before you dive headfirst into a niche industry, you need to research it. Learn who the big players are, what the industry actually does, and whether it’s thriving or just a trend clinging to life support. You wouldn’t buy a car without test-driving it, right?

2. Target your materials

Now that you understand the industry, make sure your resume and LinkedIn profile effectively address the essential key points. Nothing screams “NOOOBB!” more than the improper use of keywords, industry terms, or essential traits.

For example, suppose you want to break into the luxury lifestyle management industry. In that case, you should know that the heart of managing multi-million dollar estates demands a lot of vendor management, staff leadership, event planning, construction management, and strategic planning. Additionally, discretion, confidentiality, and loyalty are essential for these jobs. Use these specific phrases and keywords throughout your materials. Even better, demonstrate ways that you embodied these principles in your past jobs, especially if you are coming from a different industry.

3. Learn the Secret Sauce

If everyone in the niche is fluent in a certain software, process, or obscure certification, you should be, too. No one wants to babysit the newbie who skipped the homework. Take a course, watch a webinar, follow industry thought leaders, dive into industry-specific podcasts —whatever it takes to increase your fluency in the industry’s terminology.

Not sure where to find this hidden knowledge? I love exploring the Groups on LinkedIn. Most of them are segmented by different industry niches. Within those groups, people share tips, resources, classes, and articles that will help you learn the ropes.

4. Make Friends in High Places

Niche industries love insiders. Get to know people who are already living your dream. Join their associations and groups. On LinkedIn, do a little “professional stalking” to follow the industry leaders and comment on their posts. Finally, be brave and invite people to connect with you. Just be sure to send a custom, genuine message with your request to increase the likelihood of starting an actual conversation with them.

5. Get Involved

Find a great article online? Share it on your social media, especially on LinkedIn and in relevant groups. Post something smart online or offer your two cents on a big development. NOTE: Stay smart on that! Don’t post a rant when you are trying to build a positive reputation. Show you’re not just flirting with the industry. You want to be a serious player.

6. Find a Side Door

If the front door is locked (and it probably is), look for a side entrance. Freelance work, temp gigs, volunteer positions, or lower-level roles that almost fit your dream job can help you build your reputation while gaining essential experience. Sure, it’s not ideal, but nothing shows your seriousness to make a change like a real, tangible, and verifiable step toward your ultimate goal.

7. Get to Know a Person

Referrals are the secret to success in any niche. If someone on the inside can vouch for you, you’re already ahead of 90% of the competition. The key is to build a REAL relationship. Nobody likes a phony who pretends to connect with them just to leverage access to their contacts.

This is why getting involved in groups, associations, and social media is essential. To quote the business world, “People do business with people they know, like, and trust.” Breaking into a niche industry requires the same strategy.
